The Global Cure for Depression?

The global statistics on depression are staggering. According to the World Health Organization, more than 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Depression, now designated a serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities, can deeply affect the lives of every human being from children to older adults (Cordero, 2022). Behavioral, emotional, and social problems are prevalent not only in adults but also in children (Maggin et al., 2016). At some point in childhood or adolescence, more than 30% of youth experience difficulties that meet the criteria for a diagnosis of depression.
What’s the answer? Strong drugs, intense therapy, and lifestyle changes can all play a role in addressing and treating depression but stop short of curing those effected by simply offering temporary supports without addressing the root cause.
